January 5, 2010 – Louisville, Kentucky
Christian comes out for a chat. He doesn’t speak long before CM Punk interrupts. Punk is going to win the title in order to prove that straight edge means he’s better than you. They wouldn’t end up making good on this matchup for nine months on a Smackdown main event, and then again a year later in another Smackdown main event.
Shelton Benjamin def. Chavo Guerrero {Semifinal Match}
This was fine. It was a Chavo match so it wasn’t good or anything, but it was fine. Benjamin hit Paydirt at 4:46 for the win. Was Guerrero inexplicably a face at this time? He didn’t try to cheat or anything. What’s the point of a non-cheating Chavo? **
Zack Ryder comes out for a chat. He’s proud of retiring Tommy Dreamer, and now ECW is all about Zack Ryder. Righto. Later, Tony Atlas asks Mark Henry if he can be his second during his match. Henry smiles and thinks about it (is he a babyface now?) but then Atlas laughs and Henry bails.
Ezekiel Jackson def. Vladimir Kozlov
You know what a big man power battle doesn’t need? It doesn’t need Jackson to hit a KneeDT and then work the leg. Other than that little interlude, they punched and tossed each other around like they should have been doing. And then, because neither guy is all that good, the match just ended with Jackson hitting the uranage at 5:08. It feels like that should be it for Kozlov. *½
CM Punk def. Mark Henry {Semifinal Match}
Henry being on defense for so much of this match was something I certainly didn’t expect. Henry’s comeback was looking like it might be fun, but then Luke Gallows got involved at ringside and Punk hit a high kick for the win at 6:02 (shown). **
