October 6, 2009 – Trenton, New Jersey
Interim GM William Regal comes out for a chat. He knows there will be consequences, but he’s going to make himself the number one contender even though the Board of Directors doesn’t want him to. Zack Ryder protests, because Regal took away his chance to get a win over Christian last week. Christian brings out a janitor who he says has accomplished more than Regal and Ryder. He brings out Tony Atlas, whose Hall of Fame ring and ridiculous laugh make him a more deserving contender than Regal and Ryder. He brings out Yoshi Tatsu, who has pinned Regal and Ryder in the last few weeks, so he wants him to be the number one contender. Tiffany returns with her arm in a sling and books Christian vs. Ryder in the non-title match they were supposed to have last week. She books Tatsu vs. Regal as well. This would have been the most satisfying segment on this show in a long time if she’d just booked Christian vs. Tatsu for the title.
Ezekiel Jackson & Vladimir Kozlov def. Tommy Dreamer & Goldust
Jackson pinned Dreamer in 5:19 with the uranage. Absolutely nothing of note happened in this match. You could imagine five minutes of these four guys fighting and it’d be no different than what was just on my screen, because they did nothing that could have possibly surprised anyone. *¾
There’s a backstage promo where Regal is trying to convince Tiffany that he knows better than her what’s good for the show, but all she wants to talk about is the Bragging Rights PPV coming up. I only bring it up because the concept for that PPV was Raw vs. Smackdown with ECW not being included at all. In fact, the only ECW match that night would be a dark match. Tiffany tried to dress it up by saying that John Cena losing his Iron Man Match would mean he’d have to leave Raw and could possibly end up on ECW, but that was a totally laughable idea. I wasn’t reading much wrestling news at the time, but ECW’s demise must have already been rumored at this point.
Yoshi Tatsu def. William Regal
The gimmick here is that Regal didn’t have a lot of time to get his wrestling gear on before the match. This wasn’t as stiff and wild as their little match from a couple months earlier, but it wasn’t boring either. Factoring in a commercial it was like eleven minutes, so it could be that their sweet spot is a few minutes shy of this. Solid stuff though. Tatsu won with the Saikyou High Kick at 7:00 (shown), though Regal’s foot was under the ropes. **¾
Chrisitan def. Zack Ryder
Regal and his pals were at ringside here, still mad at the way Regal lost. On the one hand, it was cool to see Ryder breaking out big moves like a Tiger Driver because beating Christian is very important to him. On the other hand, moments later Kozlov attacked Christian giving us a crappy disqualification finish at 8:08. Could have done without that. After the match, Regal and friends beat up Christian and Ryder. I guess that’s a face turn for Ryder? **¾
