September 26, 2006 – Tulsa, Oklahoma
Jim Ross starts the show in front of his home-state fans. Matt Striker interrupts on behalf of Paul Heyman to rag on Ross. Striker really harps on the alcohol complaint (because he’s feuding with Sandman) which makes me wonder why he and CM Punk aren’t on the same side of the face/heel divide. I bet they won’t address it. Sandman pops up in the ring and helps Ross beat up Striker. Ross endorses Sandman’s bid for the ECW Championship and shares a beer with him. I’m not mad at any of this, as it was short, it made sense, the babyfaces went over, and it built to the main event.
Rob Van Dam def. Hardcore Holly {Extreme Rules Match}
This is one of only a few notable matches in the preboot WWECW run. About halfway through the match, Holly and RVD go through a table and Holly’s back gets a nasty gash on it that bleeds all over the place. From there things feel pretty intense, especially because the cameras and the commentators really focus on the gore. Even beyond the cut, this was the best Holly match I can think of, with both guys fighting hard as hell and also selling the punishment to the point that I hurt watching it. Is there a reason Holly couldn’t perform at this level without getting his back torn open? Holly gets a deserved ovation after the match. ****
Kelly Kelly wants CM Punk to know that she’ll be doing an extreme strip poker competition. Since Kelly is only 19 she can’t get into casinos (go to Windsor, Ontario), and she wants Punk to help her learn how to play strip poker. Mike Knox wants Punk to focus on his own woman. Punk would be happy to, but he rips on Knox for not being enough of a man for Kelly. Then Knox insinuates that he beats up Kelly in private. This show casually drops really problematic messaging a lot.
Ariel nc. Francine
The match never really goes anywhere as Ariel gets half naked, Kevin Thorn gets involved, and then Balls Mahoney runs out to save Francine. At least it was short. N/A
Rene Dupree tries to make a joke about being extreme by coming out of the shower and looking at his penis, but he’s so clearly wearing gym shorts under his towel that it makes the already unfunny joke kinda sad.
Big Show def. Sandman
Before the match, Show upset Heyman by allowing the Singapore cane to be used in this match. It ends up saving what would have otherwise probably have been a boring match, as the cane was the equalizer that Sandman needed to be competitive, and as soon as Striker ran out to steal the cane, Sandman was out of luck and lost pretty much immediately. I liked this a lot more than I expected to, even if the finish deflated the crowd. **¾
Aside from the Kevin Thorn stuff and the backstage stuff, this was an honest to god good hour of professional wrestling. I didn’t think this show had that kind of juice.
