A well-produced, self-contained, wholly unique wrestling show that had a finite number of episodes and was very well-received? Yeah I’ll review all that.
October 29, 2014 – Los Angeles, California
A kid in a hoodie is getting his ass kicked on the street. A man in a lucha mask comes to his rescue. He’d come to be known to us as the original El Dragon Azteca, and the kid in the hoodie would be his protege. He talks about the history of lucha libre.
Next we see Dario Cueto Lucha Underground’s owner, going to AAA TripleMania to offer the wrestlers a chance to fight for him. He dumps a bunch of money at the feet of Dorian Roldán to get him to sign off on it. In the Lucha Underground venue, the Temple, Cueto offers $100,000 to the luchador who impresses him the most tonight.
Blue Demon Jr def. Chavo Guerrero
Oh god, I’ll never escape the heat suck that is Guerrero. Demon won with a modified Sharpshooter after a decent enough five-minute match capped off with a dope powerbomb off the second rope. **¾
Cueto has a meeting with Konnan. Konnan introduces him to a Prince Puma, only for Cueto to reveal that he’s signed Johnny Mundo. Cueto wants them to fight each other tonight. Konnan says that Puma is descended from the ancient Aztec warriors that began the masked fighter tradition.
Son of Havoc def. Sexy Star
Havoc is a voice-modulated M-Dogg, and he doesn’t want to fight a woman. Star doesn’t care, tries fighting him, and gets beat in under two minutes with backbreaker. N/A
Cueto approaches Guerrero to ask him why he was humiliated tonight. He tells Guerrero that he’s bringing in someone else to take out Demon, and nothing will be the same once this new luchador arrives.
Johnny Mundo def. Prince Puma
This got the crowd freaking out, though if Vampiro wanted to capitalize on that on commentary when he suggested that this could be match of the year (not even close) he needed to do it with even the slightest bit of enthusiasm in his voice. The match was a very compelling first main event, with both guys trying to one up each other given their similar styles. Mundo won with this End of the World twisting split legged moonsault. They hug it out after the match, which sort of reflects why the match was really good but not mind-blowing; there wasn’t any real animosity in it. ***¾
After the match, Cueto shows Mundo the briefcase full of cash, but then pulls it away as Mundo and Puma are attacked by Ricky Reyes and Lil Cholo. Ezekiel Jackson comes out and helps them finish the job. Cueto says they work for him. It’s a little muddy on whether Jackson is the guy Cueto walk talking about to Guerrero. I think probably not.
