Lucha Underground: Uno! Dos! Tres!

April 1, 2015 – Los Angeles, California

Big Ryck, his friend Killshot (Isaiah Scott), and his cousin the Mack (Willie Mack) pay Dario Cueto a visit. They’ve heard that Cueto put out a hit on Ryck. Cueto tries to calm them down by offering them a spot in a tournament to crown new trios champions. They also extort a bit of cash from Cueto. The tournament will last four weeks.

Johnny Mundo def. Angelico
This was a lot better than the typical preliminary Lucha Underground match. These two gelled really well together, and every transition in the match felt totally logical. Mundo snuck in the End of the World for the win at 7:45. I’d be down to see a rematch here, even if this probably just happened to reheat Mundo. ***¼

Black Lotus counts herself lucky that she was kidnapped, because she was going to make a deadly mistake. El Dragon Azteca took her, and he was there the day that Matanza killed her parents (killed her parents?!). Azteca is going to train Lotus to defeat Matanza. I dug the Kill Bill motif here. Later, Alberto del Patron congratulates Mundo on his win. They trade friendly jabs, and it’s clear they’re heading for a showdown. Later still, Cueto tells Sexy Star that he wants her in his tournament (didn’t he call her a freak a few weeks ago?), and he’s giving her stronger partners than her old comedy companions. They’ll be Super Fly and Pentagon. That’s a motley crew.

Drago def. Aerostar
The ring announcer saying out loud that the winner of this best of five series will get “a unique opportunity” is so silly I can’t stand it. I don’t really understand the psychology in these matches. Here, Aerostar hit all the moves that had gotten him wins in the past, but Drago kicked out of them this time. What changed? And from there Drago controlled the match until he got a crucifix pin for the win. I’m just not getting it. The series is now tied 2-2. **½

Cueto brings Angelico, Son of Havoc, and Ivelisse to his office to tell them that they’re all losers and they’ll be a trios team together. None of them are happy about it.

The Mack, Big Ryck & Killshot def. Sexy Star, Pentagon & Super Fly {Semifinal Match}
They haven’t laid out the brackets, but basically there are three semifinal matches that will lead to a triple threat finals. Matt Striker calls Killshot a “unique kind of luchador,” though the only unique thing about him is that he’s black. Striker is the worst. Pentagon trash talked his partners before the match, so they were hesitant to tag him in. Mack & Killshot both got to show off here,and they made the most of it. The match was a little disjointed, and felt more like a midcard match than a main event, but you can’t have it all. Killshot hit a diving double stomp on Fly to give his team the win at 10:59. After the match, Pentagon tried to attack Fly but Star made the save. What was Cueto’s gameplan here? He doesn’t like Ryck and his friends, so why would he put them up against such a dysfunctional team? ***
