Lucha Underground: They Call Him Cage

January 28, 2015 – Los Angeles, California

Dario Cueto approaches Cage while he’s working out. He’s giving Cage a title shot tonight because he likes his aggressive style. Cage now only seems capable of saying his machine catchphrase and nothing else.

Fenxi def. Mil Muertes
Muertes did something here I don’t think I’ve ever seen before; he punched Fenix from a standing position while Fenix was on the mat. This was basically a Meurtes squash with a surprise Fenix pin to top it off at 4:23. Nothing special here. **

Bingeing this show sure makes Cage seem like a drag. We get another video package of him, this time to see him no-sell a group of thugs who try to beat him up in an alley with break-away weapons. I’m more interested in why they were after him, but it’s a vignette so we’re not supposed to think about it that hard.

Cortez Castro, Mr. Cisco & Bael def. Aerostar, Super Fly & Argenis
The crowd ragged on the Crew for not being able to wrestle, so Bael put Aerostar in a chinlock. That kind of trolling is wrestling 101. And let’s be real, B-Boy, Ricky Reyes, and Lil’ Cholo are better wrestlers than 95% of the wrestlers on the indies. There’s a reason their careers as notable wrestlers spanned over a decade. The match was pretty cool, pitting the luchadors flight against the Crew’s brawling and cheating. After a wild batch of dives, Cisco & Castro hit the Shatter Machine on Argenis for the win at 10:54. ***¼

Vampiro being the guy doing the sit-down interviews is starting to drive me nuts, as the guy can barely string a sentence together. “You could have cut the knife it was so intense.” Just let Matt Striker do this stuff, at least he can speak. This time it’s Prince Puma and Konnan being interviewed, and to the shock of nobody, Konnan does all the talking and won’t let Puma speak. Vampiro tries to paint Konnan as a heel, and points out that even though Konnan is supportive of Puma, he’s clearly more interested in getting himself over than getting the champ over.

Prince Puma def. Cage {Lucha Underground Championship Match}
I think the way this show is edited might be detrimental for matches like this. We needed Puma to be fighting from behind for longer stretches of time to actually feel like his title might be in jeopardy. The action was good, but it felt like the face-in-peril segments were cut out. Kind of a bummer. Cage hit a low blow at 10:10 and got disqualified. After the match, Konnan hit Cage with his cane and got laid out for his trouble. Cage then ripped the championship belt in half as Konnan bled and Puma writhed in pain. That was a pretty cool visual to end the show. **¾
