Lucha Underground: The Cueto Cup

August 23, 2017 – Los Angeles, California

Sexy Star def. Veneno {Mask vs. Mask Match}
Joey Ryan ran out and unmasked Veneno a few seconds into the match. Veneno/Ricky Reyes/Cortez Castro brawled at ringside until Star won by count out in 51 seconds. Ryan hit Reyes with a low blow. N/A

Johnny Mundo & Benjamin Cook enter Dario Cueto’s office. Cook holds the main event and the title hostage unless Cueto assures them that there will be no shenanigans in the main event. Cueto will fire anyone who gets involved. Mundo wants the Worldwide Underground allowed at ringside, but Cueto convinces Mundo that he’s good enough to fight solo. Mundo promises to take the title to another promotion if he loses unfairly tonight.

Prince Puma def. Pentagon Dark {Number One Contender Match}
Matt Striker bent over backwards to talk about athletes of Latin descent being etched on a cup (the way these guys want to win the Cueto Cup) by referencing the very few hockey players who are on the Stanley Cup. I mean yeah, the World Cup isn’t actually a cup but it’s way more friendly to this demographic than the NHL is. This match was fun, but as we find out later went a bit short because the main event went quite long. That’s a production error, in my opinion, as this tournament went on for months and the finals deserved more than ten minutes. Puma won in 9:37 with the 630 Senton. Puma shoots Vampiro the Cero Miedo sign after the match, getting revenge for his new mentor. Puma gets booed quite a bit when he’s awarded the cup. ***¼

Johnny Mundo def. Rey Mysterio {Lucha Underground Championship Match}
For everyone who drools over the possibilities of what ex-WWE guys can do in other promotions, here’s a show that really lets guys let it hang out only for these two to put on a decidedly WWE midcard style match. This was half the speed it needed to be, sprinkled with awkwardly executed exchanges, and lacking a compelling narrative given the TV time it got. For all the hype, this has to be considered the most disappointing match in LU history. And did it need a ref bump? Low blows and weapon shots are always more fun when they come with a creative distraction instead of a lazy ref bump. Having Dominic Mysterio interfere on behalf of his dad was clever, as he wasn’t employed in the first place and couldn’t be fired. But then Mundo won anyway, so what difference did it make? Then Cueto interfered to stop Mysterio from becoming champion and ate a 619. That bit actually did work for me; it was logical and fun. Though it leading directly to Mundo winning with the End of the World at 18:05 was pretty cheap. **¾

So we end up with the OG main eventers fighting for the title at Ultima Lucha Tres.
