Lucha Underground: Six To Survive

June 15, 2016 – Los Angeles, California

Pentagon def. Fenix, Ivelisse, Johnny Mundo, King Cuerno, and Taya {Number One Contender Elimination Match}
This was the first Lucha Underground match I’d ever seen, as I picked it somewhat randomly from a list of standout LU matches to give me a taste of what LU was when I got back into wrestling a couple years ago after a fandom hiatus. It is a hell of a match. Everyone was in the ring at the same time, but the story was clear and I never felt like it was too chaotic. Ivelisse and Taya more than held their own, kind of like in a superhero movie when men and women fight and it’s okay because they’re on a similar competitive level. There were plenty of head-drops here, and they all led to long breaks in action and to the finish.  I’m very appreciative that head-dropping moves led to eliminations here, or at least to long breaks in the action. These folks know how to make dangerous moves mean something. A red-eyed, tattered-masked Mil Muertes returned early in the match, attacking Cuerno and allowing Mundo to hit him with the End of the World for the elimination. Taya and Ivelisse had a skirmish that ended with Taya hitting a double stomp for the elimination. This was a little awkward, as it seemed like Mundo was supposed to be involved somehow but missed his cue and came in late. From there it turned into a Lucha Brothers vs. Mundo & Taya match, until Pentagon eliminated Taya with a package piledriver. After a good chunk of triple threat time, Pentagon dropped Fenix onto Mundo to disqualify Mundo. The match ends with a good long stretch of Fenix vs. Pentagon, until Pentagon gets the win with the package piledriver at 35:32. ****¼

After the match, Pentagon says he’s going to break every bone in both of the Cueto brother’s bodies.
