Prince Puma def. Manny Martinez
Martinez gets creepy with the ring announcer before the match. I guess he was a Tough Enough guy but I’m not familiar and so far I’ve hated everything he’s done in LU. The commentators say that Martinez would be in line for a title shot if he pinned Puma, but they ignore that Cage did just that two weeks earlier and there’s no sign of a title shot for him. This was the first bad match in LU in a while. Puma won in 3:49 with the 630 senton. Hernandez comes out after the match, so Konnan offers up the title match against Puma right now. Hernandez decided against it, which doesn’t make sense as he’d never be this much more fresh than Puma again. *½
Johnny Mundo tells Vampiro that he attacked Alberto el Patron because he’s been in LU since day one, and Patron just strolled in because he’s lucha royalty and was pushed to the top. Mundo’s not thinking about Patron anymore; he’s got his sights set on the title. I guess this was the “shoot” part of Shoots and Ladders.
Texano def. DelAvar Daivari
Daivari is somehow a heel now, despite getting an ovation for his original attack on Texano and doing nothing particularly heelish aside from being billed from Beverly Hills. Also, Texano has totally been a heel up until now, getting disqualified in their last match for attacking the referee. They go with the crowd though and Daivari attacks before the bell. I wonder if they had Daivari cut a dark promo before the match to get the reaction they wanted from the fans. Then, Big Ryck attacks Texano and gets Daivari disqualified at 3:53. Matt Striker assumes that Daivari and Ryck are friends or that Ryck is getting paid, but since the audience knows things that those in the Temple don’t Striker shouldn’t know about the wad of cash that Ryck had last week. Match was nothing. **
Catrina haunts Cueto, and tries to get the key to Matanza. She tells Cueto that Mil Muertes is coming back more powerful than ever. She wants another match against Fenix… a death match. That seems to turn Cueto on. What a weird guy. Later, we see Black Lotus hitchhiking back to the Temple to kill Matanza. Then, Chavo Guerrero approaches her mentor, El Dragon Azteca, and says that if doesn’t want her to die, he’ll need his help. He’ll help Black Lotus as long as his problems in Mexico disappear. Azteca agrees. I don’t like Guerrero, but this show is filmed and paced in such a way that it’s hard not to mark out for his return.
Ivelisse, Angelico & Son of Havoc def. Bael, Mr. Cisco & Cortez Castro {Lucha Underground Trios Championship Ladder Match}
The Crew was wrestling under the threat that they’d be sacrificed by Matanza to the Aztec gods should they lose. The commentators tried to say that Ivelisse was a liability in this match, but the way the rules work she’s at worst a non-factor. Anyway, this was the kind of ladder match I don’t care for, which was much more about hitting spots than it was about trying to win the match. At one point, Castro was the only person left in the ring and for some reason just walked out of the ring rather than climbing. That kind of thing drives me insane. Cisco getting dumped off of a ladder through the window-less opening in Cueto’s office (and super jump from inside the office) was cool though, I’ll give them that. It’s not that I don’t like cool spots, and this had more than a few (Angelico’s off-the-office missile dropkick was cooler than when he hit the crossbody to win the titles in the first place), I just don’t so much buy that under threat of death, the Crew would miss any opportunity to win. But I do have to give them credit for having it be the injured Ivelisse coming in to win in the end, because that’s just good storytelling. She bit Cisco’s hand and grabbed a belt at 13:43 to win. ***¾
