Matanza Cueto def. Cortez Castro
Antonio Cueto (who I just realized sounds like Strong Bad from Homestar Runner) outs Castro as police officer Ricky Reyes before the match, though we already knew that thanks to the 5-0 Street Fight last season. Matanza wins the match in 16 seconds with the Wrath of the Gods and then writes Castro out of Lucha Underground with his disappearing sacrifice trick. We spent a lot of time with Castro and it rarely worked in the Temple, so I suppose good riddance. It’s a shame, there was a lot of potential for him as a sympathetic babyface in over his head with this storyline. N/A
Ivelisse def. Joey Ryan {Ancient Medallion Match}
Not much to see here. Ivelisse had a lot of crowd support, but it didn’t translate to an exciting match. I suppose the bit where she stopped him from groping her was interesting. The finishing flurry was fun too. Ivelisse got the win at 5:38 with the Code Red. **¼
The Mack def. Son of Havoc and Killshot {Double Ancient Medallion Triple Threat Match}
Havoc didn’t get pinned, so he got a medallion also thanks to a pre-match stipulation from Cueto. There was some fun, mindless stuff in here. A fighting spirit segment with Mack and Killshot woke the dead crowd up. Havoc got to jump around the ring in an entertaining way for a bit. They also snuck in some story with Killshot being resentful of Havoc being placed on the team without his say-so. It’d make more sense if Killshot’s original trio wasn’t mandated by the junior Cueto. It’s also a bit uncomfortable because it suggests that Killshot’s motivations might be racial. In the end, Killshot hit Havoc with the Killstomp and Mack hit Killshot with the stunner. Mack had his choice of who to pin, and ultimately gave the second medallion to Havoc by pinning Killshot at 9:26. Killshot walks out on his partners after the match. You have to assume Mack will explain to Killshot that he sees him as a greater threat than Havoc in the Gift of the Gods Championship Match. ***¼
Mil Muertes def. Cage {Ancient Medallion Match}
Matt Striker compares Catrina’s new red dress to Vince McMahon’s red office. To the surprise of no one, these two big boys had a good albeit short brawl. The finish saw them get frustrated with counts they deemed too slow and take out every referee in the company who came in to replace the one before him. Pentagon Dark comes out to get revenge on Cage, hitting him with a chair and giving the win to Muertes and the Flatliner at 7:18. If you like chaos, this is a nice way to spend some time. Catrina walks out rather than do her lick of death after the match and Muertes doesn’t seem happy about it. Dark taunts Cage after the match but tells him not to worry about the medallion, because he’s giving him a title match next week. Dipshit Dark is fun. ***¼
The Rabbit Tribe hangs out in a trippy room (Saltador speaks!) when Mascarita Sagrada arrives and says the White Rabbit will see them now. They enter a door (and go through a portal?) and arrive at the throne of the White Rabbit. He has another mini luchador in a cage made of roots. He’ll guide them if they kill Sagrada. Paul London doesn’t think he’s being serious, but when he realizes it’s legit he bludgeons Sagrada with a stick. It’s very, very bloody. Rabbit finds it entertaining and says he’s going to see how far the Rabbit Tribe is willing to go. That was tonally confusing and really disturbing. I wish they’d just transformed Sagrada into El Bunny instead of killing him so that he could switch characters.
