Lucha Underground: Rest in Pieces

June 27, 2018 – Los Angeles, California

Ricky Mundo tells the Worldwide Underground that he got his creepy doll, Rosa, from the Island of the Dolls in Mexico. Some of my friends wanted to go there when I visited last year and this just reinforces that we made the right decision by skipping it. Johnny Mundo barges in and says that they’re at war with the Reptile Tribe. He wants Jack Evans to call one of them out, but he hates snakes and doesn’t want to. He’d rather go to his colonic. Mundo also wants them to find Angelico. After everyone leaves, Rosa tells Ricky that his secret is safe with her. The doll’s appearance in Aztec Warfare would have seemed way less dumb if we’d gotten this segment first.

XO Lishus def. Jack Evans
I doubt they meant for us to make a connection, but calling Lishus a colonic is pretty goddamn homophobic. Lishus won with an avalanche X-Factor at 5:54. The match started as a strong showcase for him, and slightly transcended mediocrity thanks to his personality. **¾

Pentagon Dark comes out for a gab sesh. He brags about winning Aztec Warfare and defeating Matanza Cueto. Cage runs out and attacks him. I guess he’s over losing the gauntlet. He gets a table from under the ring and it gets no response. I haven’t seen a table get so little a reaction in decades. He powerbombs Dark through it. The fans also don’t say Cage’s catch phrase along with him. Were most of these fans new and papered? Why weren’t they reacting like they usually do?

Melissa Santos tells Fenix she’s worried about losing him. Fenix reminds her that he won the last Grave Consequences Match he was in. He may be the Man of 1,000 Lives, but they all belong to her. She comes back to do announcements for the main event.

Mil Muertes def. Jeremiah Crane and Fenix {Three Way to the Grave Match}
The first half of this match was filled with wild spots, but got a little sloppy near the first elimination. Ivelisse returned and attacked Crane with a hammer to avenge his attack from Ultima Lucha Tres. She put Crane in the coffin and closed the lid at 12:42. The second half was a throwback to the first Fenix vs. Muertes casket match, with Fenix’s mask ripped and his face bloody, only this time he has Santos shouting support for him. These two really know how to string a gnarly match together. I wish Muertes could have gotten Fenix into the casket more quickly after the wild Flatliner, but he didn’t and I’m not going to let it take too much away from the match. Muertes won at 20:19. ****

Antonio Cueto has Matanza chained in a room, rather than keeping him in a cell. He says that a sliver of Matanza’s soul exists within the key. Antonio, like Dario, cares for Matanza. But caring got Dario killed. Antonio doesn’t want to end up the same way, so he throws Matanza the key and says to destroy it, along with his soul. Matanza does it, supposedly becoming a god and losing the last bit of his humanity. I’m curious to see if there’s any noticeable change in Matanza going forward.
