El Dragon Azteca def. Ivelisse {Gift of the Gods Championship Match}
The crowd was very quiet for this, which isn’t surprising as both Ivelisse an Azteca (until winning his belt) spent their Lucha Underground careers booked as dorks who couldn’t get wins on their own. Azteca took one gnarly bump from the ring to the banister, but the rest of the match was far from memorable. Azteca hit a diving legdrop for the win at 7:16. Nobody made any sound for the finish because he’d never used that as a finisher before. This match was a real indictment of Lucha Underground’s booking of these two. **
After the match, XO Lishus and Joey Ryan come out to give Ivelisse some support. They suggest that the three of them go after the Trios Championships. They’ll face whoever wins the main event tonight. They’ve done nothing to earn it, but that’s never stopped a trio from getting a title shot before.
King Cuerno nc Mil Muertes {Number One Contender Match}
This was aggressive and fun while it lasted, but at 5:08 both guys shoved the referee and he threw out the match. I could have used more of this and less pretending that anyone cares about Ivelisse to build to her fake, coerced respect ovation. Antonio Cueto says both guys get the title shot against Pentagon Dark next week. **½
Daga, Kobra Moon & Jeremiah Snake def. Aerostar, Fenix & Drago {Lucha Underground Trio Championship Match}
Jake Strong comes out before the match to challenge Drago & Aerostar to a match for the titles if they win them. He’ll even challenge them on his own. What he won’t do is look at them, choosing rather to look all over the building. What is wrong with him? What is this character? The Reptile Tribe’s theme music reminds me of the Ax Gang’s theme in Kung Fu Hustle. I dig it. I also dig Fenix changing his style now that he’s a zombie, and just wish Snake also zombied out since they both got “killed” in the same match. The commentators don’t mention the connection either. I more than anything dig Vampiro shutting down Matt Striker’s attempts at promoting conspiracy theories on commentary. Drago & Aerostar couldn’t get Fenix with the program and had to go a lot of the match without him. Fenix then attacks Aerostar out of nowhere. It grinds the match to a halt and allows Snake to hit Aerostar with the shoulder breaker for the win at 9:16. More story than action, but some of the action was fun and the story moved things forward. After the match, Melissa Santos checks on Fenix, but he shoves her to the floor. Azteca runs out to check on Santos. Were people clamoring for zombie heel Fenix? It’s a little early to judge but I’m not feeling it so far. ***
Marty Martinez barges in on Cueto and gives him a stack of cash. Mariposa paid that much for a Gift of the Gods Championship match, and he wants one too. Cueto agrees. Martinez gives him more money, but we don’t get to find out what it’s for.
