Dario Cueto laments Big Ryck’s lack of focus, telling him that DelAvar Daivari’s money has blinded him. Ryck doesn’t like the use of that word. Cueto gives Ryck an Aztec Medallion, and tells him that he’ll reveal what they represent tonight. Ryck intimidates Cueto into giving him some money too.
Texano def. Johnny Mundo
Texano won by disqualification in 5:55 when the Crew attacked him. Mundo joins in, because why not, until Alberto el Patron makes the save. The match was alright, pretty hard hitting at times, but too short to turn into anything compelling. Patron and Texano cast each other knowing gazes after clearing the ring. **½
Cueto talks to Hernandez about the way he’s been using straps to attack Drago. He reveals that Ultima Lucha will be two weeks long, and that Hernandez will fight Drago in a lumberjack strap match. Because the fans hate him, they’ll be the lumberjacks, and they’ll be the ones holding the straps. Hernandez promises to attack any fan that touches him.
The Mack def. Cage
The Mack won in 43 seconds with a sunset flip. The Mack now holds two wins over Cage. Cage attacks him immediately after the decision. The brawl goes all over the Temple as Mack and Cage beat up everyone who tries to separate them. Cueto comes out of his office to book them in the opening match at Ultima Lucha in a falls count anywhere match. The build to this match was pretty stupid, but whatever I like both guys. N/A
Cueto gets in the ring for another announcement. He says that the Aztec Medallions will be joined together to form the Gift of the Gods Championship. The belt guarantees its holder a shot at the Lucha Underground Championship. Cueto rips on Money in the Bank, which I love because honestly fuck Money in the Bank. Once you cash in the Gift of the God’s, Cueto has a week to promote the match. While you wait to cash in the Gift of the Gods, you’ll have to defend it against challengers. After the promoted LU Championship match, the Medallions are scattered again and the process starts over. So it’s Dragon Ball meets Money in the Bank meets the IWGP Heavyweight Championship challenge rights certificate. Or it’s just a new take on the original Open the Brave Gate Championship. Either way, I dig it. They’re going to have the first seven-way match for the Gift of the Gods Championship at Ultima Lucha among those holding Aztec Medallions. Ryck, Jack Evans, King Cuerno, Sexy Star, Bengala, and Aerostar come to the ring to put their Medallions into the belt. There’s one slot left because Fenix’s medallion was destroyed by Mil Muertes. Cueto has a replacement, and he’s putting it up for grabs in a special battle royal. Fenix returns to get his medallion back.
Fenix def. Argenis, DelAvar Daivari, Famous B, Killshot, Marty Martinez, Mascarita Sagrada, Ricky Mandel, Super Fly, and Vinny Massaro {Ancient Medallion Battle Royal}
This was special in that the final two luchadors fight to a pinfall or submission decision. Almost everyone in this was a jobber, so the crowd slept on it. This came down to Fenix and Martinez, which is a bummer because Killshot was right there and Martinez was a jobber. Fenix wins with a roll up at 7:12, after having way too hard of a time putting Martinez away. **
Prince Puma comes out to chat for the first time, now that Konnan is out of commission and can’t speak for him. But then he doesn’t talk, and instead he invites Mil Muertes and Catrina to the ring. The Disciples of Death attack Puma, but he fights them off. Muertes attacks but Puma puts him down too. That’s the first time Puma has looked really strong in some time, which telegraphed that he’d be losing the title in two weeks.
