Lucha Underground: Pain, Love, and Sacrifice to the Gods

July 4, 2018 – Los Angeles, California

Did this really air on Independence Day? Catrina uses Fenix’s life force to transform into… a woman in a red dress. Presumably she’s mortal now. Melissa Santos pines for her lost love when she’s approached by Catrina. Catrina admits that it was Fenix who she loved all along, and then gives her half of the amulet to Santos since she’ll never see Fenix again.

Jake Strong def. Big Bad Steve
Steve is accompanied by Beautiful Brenda while Famous B is in the hospital. B might lose his leg, according to the commentators. Not sure how they plan to deliver on that claim. Strong won in 2:06 with the anklelock. Just a squash. Strong powerbombs Steve on the floor after the match. N/A

Antonio Cueto seems to be more of a get drunk on Modelo guy (good thing he had them sponsor the show) than a cocaine guy like his son. He asks King Cuerno where the gauntlet is. Cuerno says it was stolen from him, though he told Catrina he gave it to someone for safe keeping. Cueto is skeptical, so he offers Cuerno a shot at an Ancient Medallion and a chance to get revenue on Chavo Guerro (for eliminating him from Aztec Warfare) as a bribe to bring him the gauntlet. Cage barges in and demands a shot at Pentagon Dark. Cueto says a cheap attack doesn’t earn Cage a title match. But he does give Cage an Ancient Medallion match against Mil Muertes. Yep, I’m into that. It happens next week.

Johnny Mundo & Taya def. Daga & Kobra Moon
With a little help from PJ Black, Taya pinned Moon after a curb stomp at 6:25. This was pretty fun, and has me looking forward to a probably Mundo vs. Daga match, or an eight-person tag match between the two factions. After the match, Vibora takes out the Worldwide Underground. On a few occasions, Mundo put Taya in harm’s way. Moon tells Mundo that he’ll be calling her queen soon.***

Matanza Cueto def. Mr. Pectacular
Matt Striker calls Pectacular by his real name because he’s clearly checked out at this point. Cueto wins in 50 seconds with the Wrath of the Gods to send Pectacular out of Lucha Underground. I mean that literally, as Cueto “sacrifices Pectacular to the gods” by making him disappear after the match. Cueto is unchanged physically or in his style, however, so I’m still out on him. N/A

King Cuerno def. Chavo Guerrero {Ancient Medallion Match}
The flimsy explanation of how Guerrero is allowed back in LU is a bad one, as Striker says that now that they’ve gone from Dario’s Temple to Antonio’s Temple, all bets are off. Prince Puma’s departure to WWE is negated by that comment. This is a universe where so much is possible, and they went with the laziest explanation. On the bright side, Guerrero was motivated and this was pretty good. Cuerno won in 10:03 with the Thrill of the Hunt. ***¼
