January 14, 2015 – Los Angeles, California
Dario Cueto boosts Fenix’s ego, and tells him that he wants him to fight Prince Puma for the title tonight, defeat him and embarrass Konnan. Fenix says he fights only for himself, but he’ll take the match. The Asian woman watches on from outside of Cueto’s office. That thread has been dangling for a while now.
Cage def. Argenis, Angelico, and Aerostar {Four Way Elimination Match}
Everyone looked good in their debuts here, but this was a showcase for Cage. Aerostar hits a huge Coffin Drop to the floor here, so now we know where Allin got it from. After some wild, fast-paced Action, Cage eliminated Argenis with a pumphandle flippy slam at 5:06. Then he put down Aerostar with a lariat at 5:32. Angelico caught a lariat at 5:58 to give Cage the win. The rapid eliminations at the end didn’t really do it for me, but I get that they were going for Cage seeing his opening and then being able to wreck everyone when he found it. The match was otherwise quite dope. ***¼
Chavo Guerrero comes out to the ring and asks for Blue Demon to meet him there for a sit-down chat. Demon obliges. Guerrero tries to hit Demon with brass knuckles, but Demon was ready and he beats the crap out of Guerrero. Two old men fighting each other is less compelling to me than Sexy Star getting the better of Guerrero.
King Cuerno dco. Drago
Cuerno comes out with a dop deer headdress. This rivalry has made no impression on me. I might remember this one because Drago hit a splash off of Ceuto’s office onto Cuerno through a table. Then the match ended in a double count out at 3:23. There was nothing to this outside of that spot. And that spot’s impact was neutered because they referenced and then later showed Fenix’s more impressive spot off of the office. They couldn’t release this match on a different episode? *½
Prince Puma def. Fenix {Lucha Underground Championship}
These two are undoubtedly talented, and they did some breathtaking things in this match. That said, I think this might have been the case of two wrestlers who are too similar, and since that similarity is aerial the match didn’t feel grounded enough for me. The spots were insane, but I didn’t get a sense for any ebb and flow during the match. It felt like things were happening, but nobody was ever in control for a significant amount of time. That sucks some of the drama out of the thing. That kind of match is great in an opener, but in a championship main event it doesn’t really cut it. Puma won in 12:10 with the 630 Senton. After the match, Cage runs in and destroys Puma with a triple powerbomb. ***½
