Lucha Underground: Johnny Mundo vs. The Machine

February 4, 2015 – Los Angeles, California

At the end of last week’s episode the Asian girl finally introduced herself to Dario Cueto. She tells him that she’s looking for Matanza. We learn later that her name is Black Lotus and that Matanza is probably the mysterious figure that Cueto has caged in the temple. Cueto played dumb with Lotus, and it seems the key he wears would let Matanza free.

Angelico def. Son of Havoc
Ivelisse cut a promo before the match, revealing that she’s dating Havoc and that she’s mad about the tweets she’s seen that say he sucks. Angelico is good, but listening to Vampiro on commentary grasp at straws trying to speak as if he’s knowledgeable about MMA (Angelico kicks a lot) when he clearly knows nothing is really irritating. As a matter of fact, I’m noticing that he tries to compare everything he sees to something else he’s loosely familiar with, even if what’s happening in the ring is almost completely unrelated. Angelico rolled Havoc up for the win at 6:32 after some silliness on the apron with Ivelisse. This was a fun sprint, if a little bit sloppy. Ivelisse storms away from Havoc after the match. ***

After taking four episodes off, Johnny Mundo is back, and Cueto wants him to take on Cage. Mundo knows that Cage tore up Cueto’s previous title belt. He wants to be champion, so he tells Cueto to get a new belt.

Pentagon def Famous B
Total squash. Pentagon hit a package piledriver one minute into the match and then made B tap out to an armbar at 1:37. He pops B’s arm out of the socket after the match. He pledges his loyalty to his master, but we don’t find out who that is. N/A

Drago def. Aerostar
This was just a fun little match from two fun little dudes who wanted to do fun little things for a fun little crowd. I could have stood to watch this for a while longer. Drago got the win with a nasty Blockbuster/DDT thing at 4:14. **¾

Fenix is working out when he’s approached by Catrina. She teases him about his dreamcatcher tattoo. She gives him a smooch and tells him make sure nobody finds out, lest Mil Muertes bury them alive. I guess we’re to assume that the people in this show don’t watch this show and rather just live the show? If that’s the case, it’s fine, I just need it to be consistent.

Johnny Mundo def. Cage
Cage still has the tattered championship belt. At one point, Cage powerbombs Mundo against the post on the outside and Vampiro says, “You know come down wrong on that you could die. I’ve been there.” Really Vampiro, you’ve died? Anyway, this was a solid enough match. King Cuero ran out and attacked Mundo, getting Cage disqualified at 6:04. Cuerno injures Mundo’s leg with a chair after the match, and Cage just waves the whole thing off. Cueto comes out and tells Mundo that he won’t let his five star matches end like that and demands it be restarted. Cage then wrecks Mundo’s leg and wins the thing with Gory Special into a Flatliner at 3:24 of extra time. The portion after the disqualification was actually really good. I’m not sure why they booked their monster heel to get disqualified twice and need someone’s help to win, but here we are. ***¼

After the show, Cueto is on the phone with someone when Alberto El Patron comes into his office all smiles and swagger.
