Prince Puma stands on the roof of the Temple, having a hard time quieting his demons. Vampiro joins him and says that only winning the championship will quiet his mind. Puma knows he’ll go mad if he can’t win it. The Worldwide Underground enters, and PJ Black flips Puma off. They’re fighting in the tournament tonight.
Pindar def. Cage {Second Round Match}
Cage took out the referee rather than take off the gauntlet. The ref recovers and disqualifies Cage in 32 seconds. Cage hits the referee with the Drill Claw. I wasn’t dying to see a Pindar match anyway, so that’s fine. N/A
Dante Fox def. Son of Havoc {Second Round Match}
Son of Madness attacked Havoc with a chain before the match. Dario Cueto insists that Havoc wrestle anyway. The match was hard hitting and engaging, but Havoc didn’t sell the pre-match attack at all. So why do it? After ten minutes of wrestling, you just get the sense that Fox wrestled a better match. He avoided a Shooting Star Press and hit the Foxcatcher for the win at 9:06. ***
Johnny Mundo wants to star in Ghost Dad 2, but wants the movie to have no ghosts and no fathers. He thinks outside the box. Then he introduces Benjamin Cook to Black. He’s their new representation. He’s a generic shlock agent and I don’t see the show getting much juice out of him.
Prince Puma def. PJ Black {Second Round Match}
There seems to be a consensus around this being the best singles match of Black’s career. I’ve never seen anything better, but my exposure to Black outside of LU consists almost entirely of preboot and early reboot NXT. He got a good amount of the crowd on his side here, despite being a dispicable heel and there’s a lot to be said for that. The kick exchanges and the wild reversals in midair were breathtaking. Black also sells like a champ. Puma had the better of him in almost every case here, but Black made it look like a tough fight the whole way through regardless. Puma won at 15:54 with the 630 Senton. It’s cool to see someone who you think has a workrate break through it. ****
Black goes to Cueto’s office. Apparently, Cooke has called him 17 times between the time the match ended and now. Cooke doesn’t want Black to fade into obscurity just because he’s out of the Cueto Cup tournament. So next week Black will fight Rey Mysterio to soften him up in advance of Mysterio’s match against Mundo. Okay, so at least they’re using Cooke for a storyline purpose, even if the Worldwide Underground could have covered this on their own. I’m also glad that they tried to keep Black’s momentum going after this great performance. I also just noticed that the Mysterio vs. Mundo hype segments stopped after the first round of the tournament ended.
