Lucha Underground: Enter the Mundo

May 25, 2016 – Los Angeles, California

Vampiro tries to convince Pentagon that he’s not ready to fight Matanza Cueto yet. Pentagon says he has zero fear (sigh, we get it) but Vampiro thinks he’s scared. Later during the intro to the show, Matt Striker acts awkward, so Vampiro ignores him and takes a cell phone call from Famous B.

Joey Ryan def. Mascarita Sagrada
Ryan won with a swinging DDT at 3:17 after a cute but forgettable match. This alliance between Sagrada and B is starting to feel pointless. *½

Taya beats up random luchadors at a lucha-themed nightclub. Then she gets in a sports car with Johnny Mundo. Haven’t done one of these kinds of segments in a minute. Meanwhile, King Cuerno has the unconscious body of Mil Muertes in his home as a trophy.

Cage def. Chavo Guerrero {Gift of the Gods Championship Match}
Vampiro rips Striker on commentary for making too much of Guerrero’s wrestling skills and legacy and I take back every bad thing I ever said about his tenure on this show. That said, Guerrero put in more effort here than we usually see, and Cage dazzled around him so even if he hadn’t it wouldn’t have mattered all that much. But he did, and so this was fun. Cage picked up the win with the Drill Claw, which they’re calling the Lucha Destroyer but I hate that so I won’t, at 7:58. ***

Ryan rummages through Dario Cueto’s office. Ricky Reyes thinks this is too reckless a way to look for evidence, but Ryan convinces him to help. They find a drawer full of money, which he starts to steal. Mr. Cisco walks in and is angry that they were robbing Cueto without him. Cisco goes to rat them out, so Reyes is forced to arrest him. Not sure what the charge is.

Jack Evans, Johnny Mundo & PJ Black def. Rey Mysterio, Prince Puma & El Dragon Azteca {Lucha Underground Trios Championship Match}
Earlier, Taya and Mundo laid out Fenix and offered Mundo up as a replacement, which made his former partners Evans & Black happy. This was a blast. It was a little sloppy and shaky in spots, but for the most part it was wild spots strung together nicely. In the last couple of minutes the heels pulled the referee and cheated like crazy (a heavenly amount of low blows and eye pokes) until Mundo pinned Azteca after Evans hit Azteca with a chair at 11:30. This is the kind of tag team wrestling I’ve been waiting for in Lucha Underground. ***¾
