Lucha Underground: Darkness and the Monster

June 20, 2018 – Los Angeles, California

Catrina appears in King Cuerno’s den, but can’t find the gauntlet. Cuerno hid it, knowing it was too dangerous to display. He doesn’t want the Aztec Tribes to be struck down. Catrina tells him that she needs to trade the gauntlet for her life force. Cuerno says he’s given it to someone else for safe keeping. Catrina teleports away.

Killshot, Son of Havoc & The Mack def. Big Bad Steve, Jake Strong & Sammy Guevara {Lucha Underground Trios Championship Match}
Famous B brought in the challengers (Steve, his mechanic, Guevara, a hot new prospect, and Strong, a WWE reject) because Dr. Wagner Jr. and Texano are making him money in Mexico. They’re called Infamous Incorporated. Steve is no more interesting now than he was before he got his lizard head cut off.  B wound up screwing his team, distracting the referee while Strong was making Killshot tap out. Moments later, Havoc hit Steve with the Shooting Star Press for the win at 5:29. Steve is a total mess in there, and everyone kind of just went through the motions. Strong attacked his partners after the match. Then he puts B in the anklelock. **¼

Antonio Cueto comes out to the ring. His office door looks like such garbage. He calls his son’s Gift of the Gods concept a stroke of genius. The process to crown a new champion begins tonight.

El Dragon Azteca def. Drago {Ancient Medallion Match}
This was okay. Azteca had been booked as such a geek in LU that I was pretty surprised to see him win here (with a takedown off of the turnbuckle at 6:07). This felt half speed for both guys, but why kill yourself when you’re getting six minutes in the middle of an episode? Johnny Mundo comes out to distract Kobra Moon until Taya sneaks in and attacks her. Then Mundo attacks Drago. All of this was revenge for Vibora’s attack on Mundo last week. **½

In his crappy, green-tinted office, Cueto is visited by Catrina. I don’t understand how they suddenly had the money to do a CG teleportation effect for Catrina now but not enough to make the show look good anymore. She explains that she’s stuck between the mortal and spirit realms. She wants another Mil Muertes vs. Fenix Grave Consequences Match so that she can use his lifeforce to free herself. Cueto makes it so, mostly because he wants her to be corporeal and have to knock when entering a room.

Pentagon Dark def. Matanza Cueto {Lucha Underground Championship Match}
I complained on the Impact co-promoted show review that Matanza was dead and done as just another guy in a six-way match, and Dark put the nail in the character’s coffin here. At the very least, it took three finishers for Dark to pin the monster, but after beating him with the package piledriver at 7:45 you have to wonder how they thought they’d get anything else out of him. He stuck around for the rest of the season, but I have to assume that Jeff Cobb unmasked would have been in the cards had there been a season 5. Matanza was too strong to have his arm broken after the match. Antonio smacked and berated Matanza for losing. ***

Jeremiah Crane barges into Antonio’s office and says he wants in on the Grave Consequences Match to prove to Catrina that he’s the guy for her. Antonio says it’s now a Three Way to the Grave Match, and that Crane’s career will be coming to an end.
