February 17, 2016 – Los Angeles, California
Ivelisse storms into Catrina’s office and demands a match against the Disciples of Death. Catrina says that she’ll have to earn a Trios Title shot. She’ll give Ivelisse and her friends a chance to do that tonight.
Angelico, Ivelisse & Son Of Havoc def. Chavo Guerrero, Cortez Castro & Mr. Cisco
In an interview I just watched (in early 2020), Vampiro admitted that he sucked as a commentator. At least he’s self aware enough to know that. The heels didn’t have much to give here, but the crowd loved Angelico so things were fiery when he was in the ring. He hit a diving double stomp on Castro for the win at 5:55. Texano runs out after the match to attack Guerrero, but only gets his hands on Cisco. **½
Johnny Mundo doesn’t feel that he’s been treated as the star that he is. He’s going to to through Cage on his way back to the top. Meanwhile, Castro and his secret police friend Joey Ryan chat in the locker room. Ryan is really cavalier with his cover. He’s also a dick.
Cage def. Joey Ryan
Ryan controlled a lot of this, which to me devalued Cage more than it established the silly gimmick Ryan has. Cage came back in the end and hit a brainbuster for the win at 4:07. Mundo attacked after the match but Cage put him down with Weapon X. **
Rey Mysterio gives El Dragon Azteca an exposition dump about the history between the Cuetos and the Aztecas. The two families worked together to find the descendents of the seven Aztec tribes and have them fight as luchadores. But Dario Cueto’s father let a monster inhabit the soul of his son Matanza because he became obsessed with the dark side of the prophecy. The two families went their separate ways. Now Mysterio needs Azteca to find a way to unite the seven tribes. Maybe he should find Aerostar, who is already doing that.
Prince Puma def. Pentagon
I’d give anything for Spanish commentary (I’m pretty sure it was available on Netflix, but it isn’t on Tubi) so I could tune Matt Striker & Vampiro out. In Lucha Underground I really feel like they’re not needed. The viewer knows more than they do, as the backstage and outdoor segments happen outside of their knowledge, and they don’t do a good job of adding any context to the matches. Crappy commentary aside, this was a consistently fun main event. The crowd was split and control almost shifted with who they were cheering for. Pentagon had this in the bag a few times, but elected to keep punishing Puma rather than putting him away. That ended up biting him, as he went for a fancy surfboard backslide, but Puma’s shoulders were up and Pentagon’s were technically down, giving Puma the win at 7:54. Pentagon attacks the referee after the match, so Puma hits him with an enziguiri and threatens to break his arm while staring at Mil Muertes on his throne. He shows Pentagon mercy, which is good because it looked like Vampiro would have had a heart attack if it had happened. ***¼
