Lucha Underground: Bloodlines

August 9, 2017 – Los Angeles, California

Mala Suerte, Paul London & Saltador def. PJ Black, Ricky Mandel & Taya {Ancient Medallion Match}
Vampiro says that the Worldwide Underground is out here instead of Johnny Mundo because he sent in the pawns rather than get in the line of fire. That makes no sense, as Mundo is the champion so he’d have no need for an Ancient Medallion. Also, he put himself in the line of fire just the week before when he fought El Dragon Azteca. Vampiro has been mostly good in season 3, but you have to wonder why nonsensical stuff like that wasn’t edited out. This match was short and cute, as the Rabbit Tribe got to do their funny bits and everyone worked hard in the time they were given. Mandel couldn’t hold up his end of the deal here, and London was able to hit him with a Shooting Star Press at 4:35. From a storyline perspective, this worked extremely well; the Rabbit Tribe got their first win because Mascarita Sagrada gave them a lucky rabbit’s foot and because Mandel is a jobber hanger-on in the WU. ***

In the back, Benjamin Cook berates the WU for the loss. Mundo tells them that they need to step it up, and it’s clear that there’s a rift in the group because of his success and their failures.

Mil Muertes def. Jeremiah Crane {No Disqualification Quarterfinal Match}
This got its stipulation because Muertes started a brawl with Crane upstairs before the match began. There was no opening bell, but I’ll count the start of this from when Muertes threw Crane through a door after the commentators announced the stipulation. If you’re like me and you find Crane irritating, this is the match for you. Muertes just beat the living hell out of him the entire match. Crane got busted open and battered with chairs, and made little comebacks at the right times so that the match could last more than a few minutes. Of course, it’s Callihan so it couldn’t have just gone smoothly. One of his comebacks went on too long and the crowd died, and then he went for a table spot, screwed it up, and almost killed himself and Muertes. It’s too bad this lost momentum, because it was a hell of a brawl up until that point. Unsurprisingly, they tried to inject some life into the finish, and it was satisfying to watch Muertes no-sell Crane’s offense and hit a jumping Flatliner for the win at 13:05. Muertes gets jealous of Catrina licking Crane after the match and hits him with another Flatliner. ***¼

Dario Cueto invites FBI Agent Winter into his office. He’s not there as a federal agent, but rather as the Order’s replacement for the deceased Congressman Delgado. Cueto is surprised to hear of Delgado’s demise, but not disappointed. The storyline becomes a bit convoluted here as Winter says that he’s been asked by “our friend in the limo” to keep an eye on the Temple. It was very heavily suggested that the man in the limo’s spirit is in Cage now… so who is in the limo? Winter loves Pentagon Dark, and is only disappointed that his flesh, and everyone else’s, will fry when the war comes. I also don’t love that Winter is played by the comedian Godfrey. I liked all the unknowns playing non-wrestler characters.

Pentagon Dark def. Texano {Quarterfinal Match}
Texano seemed to be a half step off here, which actually made me less disappointed than I otherwise would have been when Famous B & Beautiful Brenda came out to cheer him on/add levity to the match. This did hurt some of Dark’s mystique I think, as he felt like just another guy here and not the imposing force he’d been since transforming. B tried to give Texano a horseshoe, but he passed it to Dark by accident. Dark used it to get the win at 6:09. Dark threatens to break Texano’s arm after the match, but B convinces him not to. Dark breaks B’s arm (for the second time) instead. He also breaks Brenda’s arm, which weirdly gets cheers from the crowd. Not sure why this was the main event instead of the much more interesting Muertes match. **¼

Catrina pays Captain Vasquez a visit. Vasquez warns that the gods are coming to end everything. Catrina isn’t scared. Vasquez says that Cage’s gauntlet is the gateway. Catrina doesn’t care. We learn that Vasquez is using their shared amulet to keep Catrina live, but Catrina doesn’t consider her ghostly existence life. In exchange for Catrina’s help, Vasquez promises to give Catrina (her daughter!!!) the whole amulet. Vasquez will then die, and Catrina will be human again. Catrina agrees. Yep, thank you, feed this right into my veins.
