April 6, 2016 – Los Angeles, California
Dario Cueto taunts Vampiro in the bathroom. He warns Vampiro to stay out of it, and says that Pentagon is lucky to be alive. Vampiro takes his pills like a good boy. Meanwhile, Ricky Reyes (Cortez Castro) and Officer Meehan (Joey Ryan) are at the station. Their boss praises Ryan’s work in getting Cueto back in the open, but Castro says that Ryan didn’t do anything and that Cueto came back on his own. Ryan says he got Cueto to pair him with the Crew in the trios tournament. Their boss wants them to win the Trios Championship.
Ivelisse def. Kobra Moon
I appreciate Moon trying to move in a serpentine way. This was solid all the way through, though it felt a little flat because nobody was in control for any period of time until Ivelisse hit a Code Red for the win at 6:30. **½
We hear Killshot speak for the first time. He was a sniper in the military. He’s murdered a lot of people and got onto an elite squad. He was captured and imprisoned for over a year. Then he beat up a bunch of enemy insurgents to escape. It’s nice for them that they got footage of the ordeal, especially as his existence has been erased by the U.S. government. He’s going from fighting masked Arabs to fighting masked luchadors, only no guns this time. Meanwhile, Famous B approaches Mascarita Sagrada and offers to make him a huge star. Then, the Mack tells Sexy Star that Dario Cueto is forcing him onto a team with Marty Martinez & Mariposa. He wants Star’s support, but she’s still tortured by the memory of them and refuses.
Joey Ryan, Cortez Castro & Mr. Cisco def. The Mack, Marty Martinez & Mariposa {Semifinal Match}
There are three semifinal matches that will lead to an elimination four-way also including the Trios Champions, though at this point the prize at the end of the tournament was still a mystery. Having Vampiro be on meds in storyline is a great excuse (that they actually use) for when he makes mistakes on commentary. I’m not mad at it. The Crew have turned babyface and show respect to the Mack, which is fine since we last saw them betraying Chavo Guerrero. This worked for me; both regular pairs worked well together, while their tacked-on third players caused tension in each group. In the end, Mariposa & Martinez sabotaged the Mack and vice versa, leaving an opening for the Crew to hit the Shatter Machine on Martinez and for Ryan to steal the pin on him for the win at 8:31. Also, watching Ron Funches mark out for the Mack was a trip. Star saves the Mack from a post-match beating and finally stands up to Mariposa. ***½
El Dragon Azteca and Rey Mysterio plot to murder Matanza Cueto. Mysterio tells Azteca that he has a lot to learn. He has to fight for honor, not revenge. He says that they’re in the trios tournament, and Prince Puma walks up and reveals himself to be the third man on the team. He also talks for the first time. Mysterio is retconning himself as Konnan this season too, as apparently now he was the one who found Puma on the streets.
Matanza Cueto def. Fenix {Lucha Underground Championship Match}
Matt Striker screws up the symbolism of lambs blood on the door, saying that Cueto marked the Temple with it. Lambs blood on the door means the house is spared from danger. I thought this guy was religious. Anyway, this was an extended squash for Cueto, who still hasn’t been on his back in a match. He’s basically the Undertaker meets Jason Voorhees. It’s a good time. He hit the Wrath of the Gods for the win at 4:48. After the match, Cueto continues to beat up Fenix. Catrina interrupts and Mil Muertes attacks. Dario appears to keep control over Matanza with a key and they leave. Muertes stares at the fallen Fenix but leaves his former blood rival alone. **½
