Lucha Underground: A War Started in Mexico

March 4, 2015 – Los Angeles, California

Dario Cueto offers Alberto El Patron against a list of the jobbers that Pentagon destroyed. Wouldn’t they still be out of action? Patron only wants Texano, but Cueto wants time to promote that match. Patron isn’t having it, so Cueto gives in.

Mil Muertes def. Fenix
Muertes throws incredible punches. It’s a lost art, truly. He does a lot of other little things well too, like convincingly bounce Fenix’s head against the apron. He also hit an avalanche Codebreaker that made me gasp. Then he hit the Flatliner at 5:46, while making eye contact with Catrina. The finish was a case of sizzle-over-steak, but the rest of the little match ripped. After the match, Muertes goes after Catrina. Fenix hits Muertes with the magic fock and saves Catrina. Catrina gives Muertes the lick of death. So what, he’s going to beat himself up then? ***

Konnan is coming to get his revenge. Hey, remember when Konnan was Prince Puma’s manager, and Puma was the Lucha Underground Champion? The way they hype Konnan you’d think he wasn’t a retired manager but rather the champion of the company. They do finally show Puma backstage later, as he’s approached by Patron. Patron tells him to man up and to pay close attention to his match tonight.

Ivelisse wants to be the number one contender to the championship because she beat Angelico. Cueto knows she only won because Son of Havoc got involved, and a win over Angelico isn’t much to brag about. Still, he’ll give her the opportunity to prove herself by giving her a rematch with Angelico, and Havoc won’t interfere because he’ll be the special guest referee.

Big Ryck def. Sexy Star
Ryck won a handicap match against the Crew here. Wow, Star got rolled. I’m not sure how Star would have believably done better, but then I don’t get the point in booking the match. I mean, they could have played up more that Ryck is half blind, and I’m not sure why they didn’t. We learn here that Matt Striker and Pimpinela Sagrada are Snapchat fans, “because the pictures disappear,” which is hilarious and I love it. Ryck thinks about hitting Star with a giant uranage, but he’s a babyface now so he instead just forces her shoulders to the mat for the win at 1:53. I guess that’s the end of her as any kind of a threat. The Crew attacks both of them after the match, but Ryck fights them off. *

Texano def. Alberto El Patron
I was appreciating how different this match was than so many others in Lucha Underground. It was way more grounded, and featured very little of what people think of when they think about lucha. But the finish was terrible, which isn’t uncommon on this show. They really need to tighten up the finishes. Patron got frustrated out of nowhere and hit Texano with his bull rope, drawing a disqualification at 12:19. Lame. **¾

Cueto convinces King Cuerno to fight Johnny Mundo in a cage. Cuerno, who speaks perfect English it turns out, is all about it.
