August 8, 2018 – Los Angeles, California
Antonio Cueto hangs up a phone call with a collaborator when Mariposa comes in for a chat. She exploits a plunging neckline to get a GIft of the Gods Championship match. When that doesn’t work, she bribes him with cash. Very fake looking cash. That works.
Matanza Cueto def. Mala Suerte
Paul London picked Suerte to be in this match because he lost the fall in their Trios Championship match. Cueto beats him in 53 seconds with the Wrath of the Gods and then sends him to wherever his sacrifices go. London hugs Saltador while smiling. N/A
Jack Evans & Joey Ryan def. XO Lishus & Ivelisse
This feels very early season one, back when everyone was floating around looking for a direction. I get why Evans and Lishus are on opposite sides of the ring, but the team pairings are given no explanation. Ryan gets turned on by Lishus’s provocative offense, and Lishus throws vibes back his way. If those two are a team after this I’ll forgive this hodgepodge. Lishus is basically the original Goldberg character, but more athletic, authentic, and fun to watch. Putting him against a receptive Ryan and an affronted Evans is good, because it draws attention to the subtle gay panic without normalizing it while also showing that there are men who don’t mind that kind of attention. Ivelisse was a total non-factor here, but the rest of the match won me over. Evans choked out Lishus at 6:50. Ryan argued with Evans after the match when Evans wouldn’t release the hold, and Ivelisse ran in to pull Evans off. That’s how you do that. **¾
El Dragon Azteca def. Mariposa {Gift of the Gods Championship Match}
It feels like a lot of this match wound up on the cutting room floor. After two minutes, Mariposa’s hair is more messed up than we’ve ever seen it, and some fans are chanting “fight forever.” If the match was that good, I wonder why they trimmed it (if that’s what happened). Another hint this was heavily clipped is that Mariposa kicks out of a 450 splash and Azteca kicks out of the Butterfly Effect before the three-minute mark. Azteca gets a roll up for the win at 3:08. So yeah, not sure how to rate it since either a major chunk of the match was missing or it wasn’t and the match was just structured to feel that way. *¾
Aerostar, Johnny Mundo, PJ Black & Taya def. Daga, Drago, Jeremiah Snake & Kobra Moon
Jeremiah Crane was brought back to life with Moon’s venom, transforming into this version of the character. Mundo told Ricky Mundo to hit the bricks because he wanted to bring the Reptile Tribe a surprise too. He also admits that they killed Vibora. Aerostar wears a Worldwide Underground bandana over his mask because there are still good things in this world. The match was a lot of fun, and you might like it even more than I did if you’re into the over-complicated double and triple-team silliness that the Reptile Tribe pulled out. Mundo pinned Drago with the End of the World at 8:44. After the match, Mundo gives his wish to Aerostar and forces Moon to free Drago. Taya is upset that Mundo gave the wish away, while Aerostar takes Drago’s shackles off. Mundo then proposes to Taya (Macho Man style), saying that Moon couldn’t grant his wish because only Taya could do that. Taya says yes asnd they make out as Pomp and Circumstance plays. Damn, this main event accomplished a lot. ***½
Ricky Mundo starts to lose his mind in the locker room, wishing Taya and Johnny happiness until death do they part.
