July 12, 2017 – Los Angeles, California
Vampiro said the quiet part out loud when he said, “They say the first round matches weren’t exciting.” Yeah, he said more after that (they weren’t exciting, they were these things that are better than exciting), but I agreed with the first clause so I’ll go with that.
Jeremiah Crane def. Taya {Second Round Match}
This was far and away Taya’s best match in Lucha Underground to date, and all she had to do to get there was beat the crap out of Crane and let him do the same. The ending was pretty lame, as Sexy Star came out to distract Taya, leading to Crane hitting the Tiger Driver ‘91 for the win at 6:24. After the match, Star laid out Taya with brass knuckles. ***
Fenix is doing some intense training when Aerostar comes in to tell him that he’s putting his money on him. Fenix calls him a time traveler and a psychic, but I thought his gimmick was that he was an astronaut. Fenix thinks Drago will leave the Reptile Tribe as he did before, but Aerostar is more pessimistic. He also won’t tell Fenix if he wins tonight. This was cute, and I wish they’d done more like it when these guys were champions so I could have felt more invested in them as a team. Actually, they totally dropped that whole bit where Drago & Aerostar were both trying to find Aztec tribe leaders. Even with Hollywood production, wrestling’s gonna wrestling.
Mil Muertes def. Paul London {Second Round Match}
They finally let London let some of his vintage swagger hang out here, as his made some incredible comebacks against the imposing Muertes. But Muertes was too much, fighting off the rest of the Rabbit Tribe in a way that Vibora couldn’t, kicking out of two Shooting Star Presses, and beating London with the Flatliner at 9:31. I dug the hell out of this, and hope there is at least one more great London match during his run. ***½
Texano is chilling at a bar when Beautiful Brenda hits on him. He buys her a drink and she starts negging him. Famous B watches from the shadows, excited that she’s reeling Texano in.
Fenix def. Marty Martinez {Second Round Match}
Martinez shoved a sandwich in Melissa Santos’s face during her ring introductions, and then hands his lunchbox to Mariposa to hold at ringside. The match was going along nciely before the storyline-heavy stuff kicked in. Martinez and Mariposa both tore at Fenix’s mask in front of Santos, who was very upset about it. That slowed the match down a lot, as the focus was on Martinez ripping the mask and putting on chinlocks. A cruiserweight should definitely steal Martinez’s dominator into a Codebreaker. Mariposa tries to give the lunchbox to Martinez but Santos stops her. Fenix gave Martinez a bloody nose with a superkick and then rolled him up for the win at 10:23. The finish was tacked on with chewing gum but the match worked for me. Martinez lays Fenix out with the lunchbox after the match. Then he bloodies Fenix up with a fork while Mariposa makes Santos watch. ***¼
